Michelle Gordon (b. 1972) is a self-taught American painter from Kansas City, Missouri. As a teenager, her curiosity about the world led her to Europe, where she felt immediately at home. Having studied French since grade school, traveling throughout France became a deeply immersive and formative experience, shaping her lifelong connection to art, culture, and creative expression. During that same journey, six months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, she stood before the remnants of a structure that had long symbolized division and silenced voices. Witnessing that pivotal moment in history left a lasting impression, deepening her appreciation for freedom of expression, especially in the arts. These early experiences shaped the trajectory of her life and continue to inform her dedication to painting and writing as acts of storytelling, exploration, and human connection.

In the 1990s, Michelle was accepted to the École des Beaux-Arts d'Avignon but ultimately found herself drawn to learning and creating on her own terms. Over time, she developed a distinctive approach to painting, applying oil paint in thick, expressive layers that blur the boundary between painting and sculpture. The paint itself becomes almost three-dimensional—a visible record of thought, feeling, and instinct.

Painting was never something Michelle set out to pursue professionally—it was simply something she had always done alongside the rhythms of daily life. In the early 2000s, while running an art and French program for children from her Ukrainian Village apartment in Chicago, she spent her free time creating large-scale oil paintings in private, rarely sharing them with others. The paintings remained hidden until a parent from the program happened to see them in a spare bedroom and encouraged her to exhibit at Webster's Wine Bar. Reluctant at first, Michelle agreed. Because the work had emerged instinctively from her imagination and emotions, she was genuinely surprised when the exhibition sold out and others connected so deeply with paintings she had always considered powerful, intense, and deeply personal. What had long been a private practice quietly evolved into a public career. Michelle has now been exhibiting nationally and internationally for over 20 years.

Throughout her life, Michelle has been drawn to the unseen connections between people. Her decision to share her work is rooted in the belief that we are all deeply connected—that what is felt by one is felt, in some way, by all. The human experience is glorious, but it is also messy, heartbreaking, and beautifully imperfect. Through painting, Michelle makes sense of her own inner world, and by sharing her work, she hopes to connect with others. Beneath our different stories lies a shared humanity—our emotions, our joys, our losses, and our capacity to understand one another.
